The Dish - May 2022

DSxHE has lift-off! Last month, we had our official community launch event on 'Health Equity: What has Data Science ever done for us?'. There was a bit of everything: a lively Challenge Jam on a range of health equity topics, a thought-provoking keynote from Sir Michael Marmot, and flowing conversations over Lebanese wraps and deep-fried ice cream. Thank you to all of you who attended, both online and in-person, to make it such a great evening. You can find a few snaps from the event here.

Welcome, one and all For those of you who are new to DSxHE (pronounced 'dish-y'), welcome! What is the Dish, we hear you ask... Every month, we serve up a rundown of what the DSxHE community is up to, upcoming events, job opportunities, awesome resources and funding calls from across the community. We also highlight our favourite articles and data visualisations that have cropped up on our Slack workspace.

What you got cookin'?

This month's DSxHE Digest includes articles on unrepresentative surveys for vaccine uptake in the US and the importance of diversity in patient data. Our Data Viz of the Month is (of course) the amazing live illustration of our launch event.

Last but not least, do join us for the next DSxHE Download on Tuesday 10th May at 6pm BST. The Download is our informal virtual community meet-up where we chat about different topics at the intersection of data science and health equity. This month, we'll be discussing demographic data in diagnosis and the role of businesses in advancing health equity.

召し上がれ,

The DSxHE Team

And on today's menu....

This month we'll be hearing from {Matthew Chisambi + Lena Woldmann} and Brieuc Lehmann, who will be leading discussions on demographic data in diagnosis and the recent Marmot review on the Business of Health Equity.

The event is open to anyone, anywhere, no matter your level of experience or background. Join us on Tuesday 10th May at 6pm (BST).

Data Viz of the Month

For our launch event, we had the fantastic digital illustrator Ralph Mann following proceedings and working his magic to turn the various happenings into ACTUAL ART. You can spot Ralph's takes on the DSxHE themes, the event challenges, Michael Marmot's keynote, and much much more. OK, OK, we know it's not strictly a data visualisation but we hope you'll at least agree that it's a pretty awesome drawing!

The Digest

Diverse voices in data: exploring views & experiences of Black & South Asian communities in the UK on patient data & its uses Bailey Wilson et al. This report is the result of collaboration between Understanding Patient Data and ClearView Research. It found that while people from Black and South Asian communities have a good understanding of patient health data, and believe that it can be used to improve health outcomes, they have low levels of trust in the NHS. This qualititative, participatory research stimulates questions about PPIE, representation & inclusivity.

Unrepresentative big surveys significantly overestimated US vaccine uptake Bradley et al. This paper describes estimates of vaccine uptake as an example of The Big Data Paradox; that increasing data size in surveys magnifies the effect of survey bias. The authors show how a survey of 250,000 respondents produce an estimate of the population mean that is no more accurate than an estimate from a random sample size of 10. Data quality reigns supreme over data quantity in this paper.
