Methodological Challenges in Inclusive Research: Ethical, Practical, and Statistical Trade-offs is a series of two free, half-day online workshops run in partnership between Cancer Research UK and the Data Science for Health Equity community.

We are excited to share the recording of the first workshop in the series, held on 20 October 2026:

About the workshop: Making research inclusive raises statistical, ethical, and practical challenges, and there is still little practical guidance on how to handle them. This workshop brought together methodologists, biomedical researchers, bioethicists, funders, and public contributors to start building that guidance, so that study findings hold across the full population a study aims to serve. Three expert panels covered:

  • Group descriptors and variable specification: how to define and measure group descriptors and other variables consistently, including the risks of broad constructs such as socioeconomic status

  • Sample size calculations: what sample sizes reliable subgroup analysis needs, and how to fund them

  • Representativeness: what representativeness should mean in practice, beyond recruiting more people from underrepresented groups

Panellists:

  • Panel 1: Group descriptors and variable specification. Chair: Carinna Hockham (George Institute for Global Health), with Bernard Rachet (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), Rohini Mathur (Queen Mary University of London) and Laia Becares (King’s College London)

  • Panel 2: Sample size calculations. Emma Hall (Institute of Cancer Research), James Wason (Newcastle University) and Mike Gardner (University of Birmingham)

  • Panel 3: Representativeness. Chair: Jacqui Marshall (Cancer Research UK), with Chris Parrish (Leeds Teaching Hospitals), Laura Woods (Newcastle University), Shoba Dawson (University of Bristol) and Richard Silverwood (UCL)
