Call for Contributors: Blog Series on An Introduction to Statistical Methods for Health Equity.

🚀 👥 ✏️ 🤔 💻 ❤️‍🩹 ⚖️ 💡

That’s right! We’re starting a collaborative blog series to explore how statistical thinking and methods can help us understand and tackle health equity challenges… And we need your help!

The series will include all sorts of helpful articles, including:

  • Introductory posts on equity concepts in applied and methodological statistics.

  • Case studies where statistical errors worsened health disparities (for example, biased triage algorithms and unfair screening tools).

  • Practical methods to measure or lessen inequities, such as fairness metrics, causal inference tools, and equity-focused model evaluation.

The aim of the game is to create a bunch of useful and clear resources that can be used as a starting point for anyone new to the field.

🎉 Bonus 🎉

The plan is to bring the series of posts together into a peer-reviewed tutorial paper. So this is also a great opportunity to help create something that will be published in a proper journal (and go on your Google scholar of course)!

What are we looking for?

  • Contributors to write posts. That means you!

  • Ideas for topics or case studies to feature.

Whatever your academic background, we welcome your input. You do not need prior blog writing experience! A typical contribution might involve one post and light engagement across 1-2 rounds of feedback.

What’s in it for you?

  • Build your writing and communication skills. Whether you’re new to science communication or just want to improve your blog writing, this is a great chance to explain complex ideas in simple language. You will have support from a super friendly and experienced team, here to help you shape your post, brainstorm ideas, or co-write if needed. No blogging experience is required, just your interest and perspective!

  • Collaborate with others who care about equity. You’ll join a welcoming community of contributors from different fields who want to make data science more fair and meaningful.

  • Gain visibility for your ideas. Your post will be showcased on DSxHE’s website and shared to the entire community of OVER 3,000 PEOPLE 🤯, so this is a great opportunity to share your insights with a growing audience of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

  • Co-author a peer-reviewed tutorial paper. Eventually, we’ll bring together the blog posts into a tutorial-style paper that we’ll submit to a proper academic journal that we can all point to, cite, and generally be super proud of. Naturally, all contributors will be included as co-authors (hello h-index +1)

Timeline

Flexible! We plan to start drafting from July onwards, with blog posts rolling out on DSxHE’s website from autumn 2025, but we welcome your involvement at any stage over the next 6 months.

Example topics

  • How statistical models can reduce or worsen triage bias.

  • Intro to algorithmic fairness metrics for healthcare outcomes.

  • Equity implications of imputation in incomplete health datasets.

  • Case study: racial bias in commercial dermatology tools.
