Session description: 

The world of medical publishing can often seem like a black box. You spend months crafting a manuscript, only to see it disappear on an often-convoluted journey into the cryptic editorial world.

This session will lift the lid on what The Lancet looks for in a paper, the steps from submission to acceptance, and tips on how to minimise the risk of rejection and make sure your work has maximum impact. We’ll also explore the effects of AI on how research is done, written, reviewed, and read, and discuss how authors, reviewers, and editors can work together to publish the best possible science

Speaker bio: 

Hugh Thomas is Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Digital Health, having previously worked at The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and in medical writing. When not assessing papers, he chairs The Lancet AI Working Group, exploring the role of AI in editorial workflows. His interests include the development and deployment of foundation models in medicine, AI regulation, clinical research methods, and AI approaches in gastroenterology, hepatology, and oncology.
