About the event

Major funders such as NIHR now mandate a consideration of inclusion as a condition of funding.

Approval agencies such as the HRA and MHRA and encouraging applicants seeking approvals to submit Inclusion and diversity plans.  But how do we make trials and health research more inclusive, and how should this be communicated to funders and approvals agencies?

This webinar will consider how to design inclusive research, how to recruit and retain historically underserved populations, how to consider intersectionality, what to consider in your analysis and results presentations and how to write compelling grant and approvals submissions that describe this.

We’ll also introduce a new practical resource that uses a worked research example to show how inclusive design can be built into a study and translated into an NIHR application and HRA/MHRA Inclusion and Diversity Plan. You can see this resource here:

The webinar will be a mix of short presentations and discussion with participants, with most time given to discussion.

About Trial Forge

Trial Forge will make trials more efficient by looking for marginal gains across all trial processes, from research question to implementation into routine care. It will encourage everyone connected with trials to be more sceptical of what we do by asking for the evidence behind all of our trial decisions.

About the DSxHE Data Diversity Theme Partner Events

The DSxHE Data Diversity Theme are co-hosting a series of events to showcase and share existing work, tools, and resources developed with partners across the health research sector. The aim of the events is to

  • raise awareness of what is already available

  • create space to share learning about how these resources were developed

  • help identify priorities for future action.

About the Data Diversity Theme

Health datasets often don’t reflect the diversity of the populations they aim to serve. This lack of representativeness can limit the generalisability of research, reduce the effectiveness of new tools, and risk widening health inequalities.

A partnership between Data Science for Health Equity and Cancer Research UK, the Data Diversity Theme brings together researchers, clinicians, funders, and patient advocates to co-create practical ways of embedding diversity across the research lifecycle. It is co-led by Dr Toral Gathani (University of Oxford) and Dr Brieuc Lehmann (UCL).
